ABOUT THE PLATINUM PROCESS
My images are original platinum photographic prints. Today’s platinum printing process is virtually unchanged when compared to the first time it was used in 1873 and still produces one of the most archival images available. A 100% cotton rag paper or photo vellum is hand-coated with a solution containing platinum and/or palladium salts and iron oxalate sensitizer. After drying, the coated paper is exposed with the negative to intense ultraviolet light, which causes a reduction of the metal salts to pure metal. The light is approximately one million times that needed for traditional black and white photography. After developing, the image is cleared to remove remaining salts, leaving a final print of pure platinum and/or palladium metallic fragments laid onto and imbedded within the paper. The resulting image is one of incredible tones with unparalleled detail and clarity.
